Muscat International Airport is the main airport in city Muscat in Oman. It is the hub for the national carrier Oman Air. The distance from Old Muscat is 30 kilometers and it is located 15 kilometers from the main residential localities. At the moment the airport is being expanded and modernized. The airport was renamed on February 1, 2008 from the previous name, Seeb, to Muscat International Airport. The development of Oman’s largest airport, Muscat International Airport, will result in one of the world’s most ultra modern airports. The existing runway at Muscat is to be upgraded and supplemented with a new runway. It will be able to take the world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus 380. The project also includes parking facilities and a motorway to the airport with three lanes in either direction, complete with a companion interchange feeding into existing motorways. 32 air bridges, two runways, a new cargo terminal, 6,000 parking spaces and much more - those are the main components in the development of Muscat International Airport. The project includes some 70 buildings apart from the terminal, including a 90-metre high control tower and an Air Traffic Management Centre. Since traffic forecasts shows that the 12 million passenger mark will be reached relatively few years after its opening in 2011, the project has been prepared to allow the airport to expand to double its size up to 48 million passengers. The passenger terminal building of Muscat International Airport consists of departures, arrivals, transfer area and duty free shopping, a separate VIP building is located next to the passenger terminal and is used for high ranking dignitaries. Car Rental Company has its desk also at Muscat airport and passengers can choose between different types of rental cars. A separate dedicated Cargo terminal building is located on the airport premises and used for handling international and domestic air freight import and export services.
